Starting April 1st, there were some changes that were implemented to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) that will affect Long Islanders. Premium increases as a result of the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act passed in Congress in 2014 and other prior legislation are the culprit. We are expecting to see increases of 15 to 18 percent for flood policies on primary residences and up to 25% if it is a secondary home or homes with repeated losses. Additionally, there will be a $25 surcharge for primary homes and $250 for all other homes.
